Below you will find a temporary review for this film. The real (better, more complete) review will be online very soon.

This Dutch film by director Mike van Diem won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the same year Titanic won for Best Film. This one is better. Okay, almost every film that year nominated was better than Titanic (L.A. Confidential, Good Will Hunting, As Good As it Gets, The Sweet Hereafter), but this one is also better than most films named above. The acting is good, the direction is great and the cinematography is beautiful.

If a European film is good it always have some greatness in it. This film is no exception. The story is translated to the screen just right. All the themes from the book, written in 1938, are still there. The movie simply is terrific so if you are able to get your hands on it, see it.
